Packing for a beach holiday: Getting organised for summer fun

Nothing says ‘holiday’ quite like a week or two relaxing on a beautiful beach. But if you want to maximise your enjoyment of those precious seaside days, it pays to be well prepared with the right beach gear. Follow these tips for packing effectively for a trip to the seaside!

Start with the essentials. You’ll spend most of your beach vacation outside so sun protection is key. Pack at least two large beach towels, a wide-brimmed hat, and long-sleeved cover up for when the midday sun is at its fiercest. Don’t forget the sunscreen – multiple bottles so you can reapply regularly without running out.

Next, choose your swimwear and other beach clothing wisely. Select swim trunks or a one-piece that lets you move freely and dries quickly. Pack a sarong to cover up and protect your legs walking to and from the water. Lightweight linen pants and t-shirts are ideal for evenings. Bring extra underwear and flip flops in case yours get lost or sandy.

Consider daybag essentials. You’ll likely be out of the house most of the day so pack an essentials bag to take to the beach. Bring water, sunglasses, cash for ice cream and snacks, beach games, a book, your phone and charger, portable speaker, and disinfectant wipes to clean gear. Toss in a beach blanket for daytime lounging.

Look for multipurpose items. Beach towels double as picnic blankets so leave space in your bag. A small beach umbrella offers shade and protection from the sun. Sandals that work for the beach, pool, and restaurants are an easy footprint. Choose a lightweight tote bag that folds up small but collapses into a useful sized beach bag.

Don’t forget accessories. Pack disposable cameras to capture special moments, a straw hat for shade, beach shoes that provide grip on wet surfaces, beach bags for wet gear, and a good old-fashioned deck of cards for rainy day activities. For the little ones, include sand toys, swim diapers, and floaties.

Finally, dedicate a separate bag just for beach reading. Nothing enhances days by the shore quite like a gripping novel. So pack any magazine subscriptions you want to catch up on as well as a few books you’ve been meaning to read.
